Avoid Becoming a Victim
Insurance fraud costs every Kansas family approximately $350 a year in higher premiums. This money goes to pay for fraudulent actions made by individuals providers or agents. In 1994 the Kansas Legislature made insurance fraud a crime in the state of Kansas.
Don't become a victim of insurance fraud. Keep in mind these simple guidelines to avoid becoming a victim:
- Be suspicious of an agent that will only accept premium payments in cash, money orders or cashier checks.
- You, the buyer, never receive a policy.
- Think twice, if an agent pressures you to buy immediately because this is your last chance."
- A hospital or medical provider bills you for procedures not performed or for office visits you did not attend. Read and examine your Explanation of Benefits.
- You're in a minor accident and someone gives you the name of a doctor or lawyer who can "make you some money".
- An agent helps you fill out your medical history for a policy and suggests you not tell the insurance company certain information.
- Your agent tells you your life insurance policy is being discontinued and you can get a better policy by using the accumulated cash value of the so called "discontinued" policy to pay all the premiums.
